Australian Navy Cadets

Recognised as an official unit in January 1997, TS Centaur provides the opportunity for the youth from Maleny and surrounds to acquire skills in leadership, self discipline and teamwork by taking part in sailing, kayaking, power boating, bushwalking, rifle shooting, drum band, parade activities, organised camps with other units and many other activities.

The Australian Navy Cadets is a voluntary youth organisation, open to young people between 12 (turning 13 in the current calendar year) and 19 years of age and supported by the Royal Australian Navy. There are some 82 Units across the country with between 20 and 80 cadets.

Our Unit, TS CENTAUR, commemorates the Australian Hospital Ship CENTAUR (AHS 47) which was sunk off Moreton Island in 1943 by a torpedo fired from a Japanese submarine, resulting in the loss of 268 lives.

The RAN supplies uniforms and some sailing craft. The local community is responsible for the acquisition and maintenance of the Unit Headquarters and raising funds for all operatonal aspect and training equipment. Parents are expected to support the cadets through membership of the Unit Support Committee and attending fund raising activities.

Cadets learn leadership skills, effective communication, seamanship and bushcraft whilst at the same time developing confidence, self discipline and pride.

SailingOpportunity exists to progress through the ranks from Recruit to Seaman, Able Seaman, Leading Seaman, Petty Officer and Chief Petty Officer by virtue of commitment, examinations, taking responsibility and assisting the unit to maintain a positive and enjoyable environment for all.

TS Centaur parades each Wednesday evening (school holidays excepted) at the Unit Headquarters in the Maleny Showgrounds from 1725 to 2100. Cadets sail & kayak frequently at various Sunshine Coast locations.
